Atmospheric fascism: Bolsonarismo as chronopolitics

The article employs the concept of atmospheres to analyze bolsonarismo as a chronopolitics, a mode of making time and mobilizing publics through the political climate. Its capacity to generate and manage anxious atmospheres and bodies is addressed through the longitudinal experience of the threat of a coup d’état in Brazil. We examine this political movement’s affinities with modulations of sovereignty/exception associated with populism, fascism, and messianism. We then explore how its violence descends into the ordinary through a mimetic contagion between the Armed Forces, leader, and people. Finally, with an emphasis on the events of September 7, 2021, we highlight how the movement prioritizes pre-objective affects such as threat, readiness, indecision, and preemption - whose lack of precise referents elevates them to true elemental forces.
