Abstract

The book Virando Estado: subjetividade, conhecimento e poder em concursos públicos no Brasil, published in 2022, is the result of Bóris Maia’s doctoral thesis. He sought to understand the world of public exams through fieldwork conducted in preparatory courses in the cities of Niteroi and Rio de Janeiro. Maia unveiled the various dimensions contained in this learning process, to which many people dedicate years of their lives. He points out that, in addition to the technical leaning of how to pass in such exams, students also incidentally learn propositions about public service and about being a public servant, which the author refers to as “bureaucratic subjection”. Therefore, gaining a better understanding of this world is also understanding how the Brazilian State historically forms and reproduces itself.
