Abstract

In this introduction to the edited issue “Atmospheres and Anthropology”, we review some of the central themes of the contemporary debate on atmospheres in social theory and introduce the articles that make up the volume. We are guided by some basic questions. What are atmospheres? We present Hermann Schmitz’s phenomenology of atmospheres and its contemporary implications, showing how it offers new solutions to the problems of materiality, mediation, and meanings. How are atmospheres produced? We propose a typology of atmospheres and a dialogue with the concepts of Stimmung and generators to analyze their relationship to techniques, habitus, and performance. How are the ubiquity, viscerality and indeterminacy that characterize atmospheres incorporated into modernity by capitalism and mass media? Finally, how do atmospheres exert their power? We show how this concept allows for a redescription of essential components of politics, such as sovereignty, aesthetics, and temporality.
