Abstract

In this paper, we present data collected in a sociolinguistic research conducted in a public school. Overall, the results show a gap between the mother tongue teacher’s theory and practice. However, teaching and learning events from the same research show the importance of building a culturally sensitive teaching practice to the various uses of language in the classroom.

Catarina de Sena Sirqueira Mendes da Costa, Universidade Federal do Piauí

Doutora em Linguística pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1989). Mestre em Linguística pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1979). Atualmente, é professora do Departamento de Letras da Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI) e professora do quadro permanente do Mestrado Acadêmico em Letras. Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Sociolinguística e com atuação em: variação linguística, alfabetização, oralidade, letramento, etnografia, pesquisa colaborativa, etnografia da comunicação e sociolinguística interacional.

Yana Liss Soares Gomes, Universidade Federal do Piauí

Doutora em Estudos Linguísticos pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) com área de atuação em Linguística Aplicada (crenças e formação de professor de língua materna e de língua estrangeira). Mestre em Letras pela Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI). Atualmente, é bolsista no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras (PPGEL) da UFPI através do Programa Nacional de Pós-Doutorado (PNPD) da CAPES.
