This article aims to review and update the existing lists up to the decade of 1980 of the words of Portuguese origin in Malay/Indonesian. The corpus used was, besides the two lists, the two most complete dictionaries of both national varieties of the language in order to verify the presence or not of the words of Portuguese origin. It was found that approximately 2/3 of the words were still in the dictionaries. It was also intended to evaluate what those Portuguese loanwords say about the linguistic contact between the Portuguese and the people of Southeast Asia. It could be found that this contact was much more intense than simple commercial relations.
