Abstract

Recent research has shown that the phatic element of language influences connectivity, enriching intersubjectivity in exchanges carried in the digital environment (Miller, 2008; Yus, 2019; Zuckerman, 2020). From this viewpoint, the objective of this study was to verify how the expression of linguistic posture (Biber and Finegan, 1988; Scheibman, 2001 and DuBois 2002, Evans, 2016), and the use of politeness strategies (Lakoff, 1977; Brown & Levinson, 1987; Cunha and Oliveira, 2020) affect phatic communication in the on-line environment. In order to do this, a manual analysis of the posts from a professional training forum was carried out, based on the identification of the linguistic strategies of posture and politeness employed. The results demonstrated that the participants acted linguistically to make relevant and meaningful contributions to the forum and that face-work took place even when the central speech act of a message was intrinsically threatening. Similarly, when expressing posture, the participants concentrated on the evaluation of a common object of attention, which also acted to strengthen social bonds, which also proved that the expression of posture can be associated with digital phatic communication.
