Abstract

This article intends to analyze, based on the theoretical assumptions of Intensional Semantics (ROTH, 1992; KRATZER, 2012), in the metalanguage of Formal Semantics (PARTEE, 1976) and Pragmatics (LEVINSON 2007; GRICE, 1975), concessive conditional utterances that contain the operator nem as a triggering negation of concessivity in Brazilian Portuguese (Not even running/Not running, João will take the bus), to postulate a possible formal behavior for cases like the ones exemplified here. Thereunto, we reviewed nem, to elucidate its negative feature and its characteristics of focus and scalarity, the object on which this analysis is focused more closely. We will also demonstrate how a pragmatic scale of possible elements involved in concessive conditional utterances with nem can be ordered in terms of possible worlds from the proposals of Roth (1992) and Kratzer (2012).
