This article presents the commented version of three poems by Carolina Maria de Jesus into English. After a brief biography of the author, the collection Antologia pessoal (1996) is presented, a set of poems selected by the writer herself, who had a dream of becoming a poet. Subsequently, we present a discussion about the translation of poetry according to Britto (2012) and Faleiros (2012). In addition, the translation project and process are outlined, highlighting the points of difficulty and attention during the version of the poems. The versions are presented in parallel with the source text, the first being “Saudades de Mãe” (Longing for mom); the second, “O exilado” (The exiled); and the third, “O lírio” (The lily). The poems present intertextuality with Brazilian romantic poets and themes that vary from nationalism to unrequited love. Carolina Maria de Jesus used a less colloquial and more thoughtful register in her poetry than in the well-known diaries, in addition to being inspired by a more conservative form of poetic writing. Her poems are worthy of gaining greater reach to minimize the historical injustice that was done to the author by being denied publication rights and becoming, for the public, the poet she already showed to be in her private diaries.
