Abstract

This scientific article discusses the importance of reading in the lives of young Brazilians, especially in high school. Although reading is fundamental, it is often limited to informational or instructional purposes, rather than being enjoyed for its own sake. In this way, the article understands reading as a critical process that involves the reader's interaction with the work, combining intellectual, sensory and emotional aspects. In addition, this study highlights the importance of literary literacy, focusing on the work of Clarice Lispector. A specific short story, “Beauty and the Beast or The Wound Too Big”, is selected to illustrate how reading works of fiction can address important themes such as invisibility, inequality and self-esteem, making reading more accessible and engaging for high school students. The specific objectives of the work include recognizing the social contexts addressed in the literary works, interpreting the meanings of Clarice Lispector's fictional texts and promoting a new perspective on reading in secondary school classes. Therefore, the article aims to promote critical reading and analysis of short stories, stimulating students' interest and providing a deeper understanding of Clarice Lispector's works and the short story genre, with a focus on fiction.
