This article aims to investigate the meaning of the Amnesty Law (law nº 6,683/1979) both on a legal and symbolic-narrative level, in Brazil, supported by the Ricoeurian proposition of amnesty as an abuse of memory. To this end, a historiographical survey was necessary that retraced Brazil's political-legal scenario between the years 1964 and 1979 in order to, by offering the historical context in which such a measure unfolded, promote legitimate inquiries and questions, which with that one we remained faithful so, from then on, we could think about the consequences of this policy of forgetting in the search for the right to truth and memory still present in contemporary Brazil.
