This article was written based on our experiences in providing popular legal advice and in teaching, research, and university extension, discussed in seminars organized by Professor Ana Maria Motta Ribeiro. In the first part, we present the experiences of the National Network of Popular Lawyers (Renap) in Rio de Janeiro and the extension group called Núcleo de Assessoria Jurídica Popular Luiza Mahin at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). In the second part, we discuss rural education and legal education within the scope of the National Program for Education in Agrarian Reform (PRONERA), as one of the constitutive experiences of the research and extension group OFUNGO/Observatório Fundiário Goiano, based at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). Both narratives start from the diagnosis of a conservative and elitist legal field and, in conjunction with popular social movements, seek to build counter-hegemonies within the university and society, based on the dialogue between knowledges, seeking to influence legal education and the justice system.
