Abstract

This paper approaches the changing in social control in China in two periods: prior to 1978, and from this year onwards. It addresses some evidences of the general change in emphasis of the current broad social control practices as compared to those exerted in China prior to the triggering of reforms in the late 1970’s. Social control is referred to as widespread practices, not as restricted to the intervention of formal body of bureaucratically organized police forces. As it will be shown, the change in emphasis of social control is accompanied by an emergent concern of top level Chinese leaders to yield conditions for the ingraining of the rule of law in China.
