A moment like that of a pandemic is one of crisis, but can also be one of reflection. The pandemic of the SARS-CoV-2, also known as “Novel Coronavirus”, invites one to, amongst other things, reflect on the role of science in society. Using a sociological respecification of Gaston Bachelard’s concept of “epistemological obstacles”, this article proposes to reflect on the relative underdevelopment and little credit that science receives in Brazil. By dividing these obstacles in external, that is, outside of the functioning of the scientific community, and internal, that is, inside of the functioning of the scientific community, I aim to show how social phenomena can impede or slow the evolution of science in terms of accumulation of knowledge. As external epistemological obstacles it will be explored the scarcity of funding for scientific research, through a comparative analysis of open data of universities in Brazil and in more rich countries; and the ambiguous perception that the public sphere seem to demonstrate about science and its results, at times valuing them, at times bashing them. As internal epistemological obstacle, it will be explored post-modern epistemological theories, especially the so-called epistemologies of the South, through a rational reconstruction of assumptions and arguments centered in one main author of such theories, Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Final considerations about the importance of science and the limiting of potential of these epistemological obstacles close the article.
