We perform critical analysis of an account that classifies certain political phenomena and behavior as “post-truth”, seeking to determine if such term is, as presented, useful to social science. In order to achieve this, we have selected a number of books published between 2016 and 2019, in Portuguese and English, on the subject of post-truth. The analysis allows the identification of a consistent narrative throughout this bibliography, that attributes causality to the algorithmic architecture of digital platforms, for producing homophilic filtering of contents and activating irrationalities inherent to human behavior. This narrative also accuses “postmodern” philosophy of spreading relativism. We find problems in this argumentation, both in its empirical propositions about digital behavior and in its exaggerated simplification of postmodern intellectual currents. This indicates that such a conception of “post-truth” is inadequate for social analysis.
