Training initiatives in water resources are necessary to overcome the challenges of strengthening and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda. This article, of a qualitative nature, aims to analyze some of the main debates related to training in water resources based on experiences carried out in different regions of the world, in order to identify the results and limits found by these case studies. For that, a systematic review of the literature was carried out and from it, a critical reflection. Although training is not considered a definitive solution for water management, it is fundamental to guarantee the democratization of water management and to sustain decision-making processes. It is concluded that, as exposed by SDG-6 and targets 6.a and 6.b, capacity-building initiatives related to water are necessary to improve the sustainable management of water for all, considering its multiple uses and the different actors involved in the process.
