ln this article we discuss the applicability of quantitative analysis to grammaticalization based on the principles of divergence and stratification. We argue that stratified variation can be investigated using quantitative methodology but that divergence creates a more complicated situation. Nonetheless, in the initial stages of change, the divergent forms or structures must have the same, or similar, meanings, or reanalysis could not occur. Furthermore, not all structural consequences of reanalysis appear at the same time. Both of these situations are amenable to quantitative analysis.
