Abstract

The  paper is a review of the book “The Rhetoric of Reaction”, by Albert Hirschman. The work analyzes conservative rhetoric between the 18th and 20th centuries. Hirschman identifies three frequent arguments: the perversity thesis, the futility thesis, and the threat thesis. The work is current, both for the return of (neo)conservatism and for the analytical and conceptual richness it proposes. In this sense, it interests both the specialized public and the less knowledgeable about politics and political rhetoric.
