THE ACTUALITY OF THE CONFLICT IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH:
AN ANALYSIS OF THE NATIONALISM ROLE IN HOSTILITIES BETWEEN ARMENIANS AND AZERIS

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is part of a context of instability in the South Caucasus region, so that both States claim for themselves the possession of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite the armed conflict between the parties taking a more violent form in 1994, the disagreements are older and unfold in instabilities until the present day. In this sense, this article aims to comprehend the configuration of nationalism and how it impacts on understandings about the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, not only under the military sphere, but also political and social, that is, observing the impact of the feeling nationalist about the subjects included in the conflict. In addition, it is intended to investigate the characteristics of instability between the parts nowadays and how the nationalist expression can be analyzed in the region currently. For that, it uses, from a qualitative-deductive study, Benedict Anderson's approach on the concept of nationalism, as well as the influences received by the author for the "treatment" of the complexity of the concept, including considering the dimension of ethnicity, fundamental for the case in question.
