THE DEBT TRAP STRATEGY:
IS IT THE REALITY OF THE EXTERNAL DEBT IN THE AFRICAN CONTINENT OR IS IT THE ANTI CHINA OCIDENTAL RHETORIC?
Keywords:
China, África, Foreign DebtAbstract
In recent years, China has been accused by some segments of Western countries - notably the US and the UK - of applying the Debt Trap strategy in its relations with countries on the African continent. The objective of the present work is to investigate if the strategy used by the Chinese state is consistent with such claims made by some Western countries. In this sense, this work intends to analyze Chinese investments and loans of 7 African countries with China between the years 2000-2019, in a comparative relation to the loans contracted with some Western countries, such as the USA, the European Union, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands. Thus, the methodology employed consisted of historical analysis of China-Africa relations and comparative analysis of the financial loans cited. The results of the research indicate that there is little evidence to support the Western narrative that China practices the Debt Trap Strategy.
