THE PATTERNS OF CHINESE FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT:

A partnership between State and market

Abstract

This paper seeks to analyze the pattern of receipt of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from China and understand what the correlations are between this pattern and the profiles of its exporting companies. This study serves us to carry out possible future analysis and comparisons in other developing countries, which used this same mechanism to raise their economic standard. To achieve this, we seek, firstly, to provide an analysis of the development profile brought by the Asian country at the turn of the 1970s to 1980s. Afterwards, a history of the receipt of Foreign Direct Investment in China after the Mao era (1976) until the current days, highlighting the sectoral, business, regional and investment patterns of this indicator. Next, the profile of Chinese private and state-owned companies, their ambitions, their sectoral investment patterns and their location is presented. Finally, the final considerations seek to summarize the content presented throughout the work. The methodology used is bibliographic descriptive and qualitative, as it relies on subjective and interpretative research materials. Among the results found, it was noticed that, despite being heterogeneous, Chinese companies have a sectoral, business, regional and investment profile shaped by the patterns of receiving FDI.
