The present article observes how, using the knowledge acquired in works about veritable criminals, such as the Maria, não me mates que sou tua mãe (1848), in Memórias do Cárcere (1863), Camilo Castelo Branco proves that much of the violence is committed precisely by those who should protect the citizens and that the jail was a world essentially inhabited by the poor. From a thorough and sometimes lyrical account, Camilo comments on what was the everyday life within what was the greatest instrument of nineteenth-century repression. One of these prisoners, José do Telhado, thanks to the Camillian feather, gains fame and notoriety arousing the interest of many readers and other authors.Downloads
