Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905): um breve estudo sobre seu pensamento moderno

A natureza do Islã é essencialmente hostil aos pensamentos liberais advindos do Ocidente? A secularização é um obstáculo ao Islã? É possível pensar Modernidade e Islã, interpretado comumente como tradição, juntos? Para responder a essas perguntas, analiso os estudos do intelectual e reformista egípcio Muhammad ‘Abduh, buscando afastar-se de pensamentos generalistas e essencialistas sobre o entendimento entre secularização e Islã. A partir de uma observação centrada em como os princípios seculares se relacionavam com as visões tradicionais islâmicas, argumento a existência de uma realidade significante, plural e interpretativa dos próprios muçulmanos em relação ao desenvolvimento da secularização e modernização em seu próprio processo histórico.
