Abstract

Is Islam essentially hostile to Western liberal thoughts? Is secularization an obstacle to Islam? Can Islam, commonly seen as tradition, be interpreted together with Modernity? To answer these questions, the studies of the Egyptian scholar and reformer Muhammad ‘Abduh are analysed, understanding secularization and Islam in a way that is dettached from a generalist and essentialist point of view. Based on a point of view focused on how secular principles relate to traditional Islamic perspectives, this article discusses how muslims have a significant, diverse and interpretive reality regarding the development of secularization and modernization in their own historical progression.
