The historiography of civic Humanism and Leonardo Bruni’s political thought

In recent years we have seen a considerable increase in the number of works on Italian republicanism, especially that developed between the 14th and 15th centuries. The aim of this article is to present the decisive moments of this historiographical debate based on the theses of continuity and rupture between the Middle Age and the Renaissance. In what concerns the rupture thesis, we approach, in particular, the political work of the Florentine humanist and chancellor Leonardo Bruni, which allows us to evaluate how in the Italian Quattrocento a new way of thinking about politics and history emerges, both linked to the defense of republican freedom. A point little explored by historiography lies in the difficulty of advancing the debate between the concepts of continuity and rupture in relation to terms that extrapolate the opposition vita active\vita contemplative. Despite their importance, one must also consider the combination of these concepts with those of self-government, liberty, and citizenship. Finally, proposing such articulation, the article maintains the importance of its contribution inserted in the intellectual context of the Italic wars
