Abstract

In this article we will analyze the social and economic insertion of workshops, factories and manufactures in Rio's urban space between 1830 and 1870. We will discuss the mechanisms for creating and continuing these establishments before the administration of the city of Rio de Janeiro in a context of attempting to remove these types of developments in the region. We will see to what extent the contribution of an authorization document would be important or not and how this process was obtained. We will deal with the mechanisms for obtaining a license from the City Council, as well as the acquisition of the title of national factory from the Ministry of the Empire. In the end, we will see that removing the industrial establishments from the urban environment was not an easy task.
