Importance of university extension in bringing university and school

Brazilian education is experiencing a chasm in terms of distance between universities and primary schools, due to reasons such as the lack of an adequate structure to make this rapprochement possible. In this sense, the existence of university extension projects is important, which emerge as a way of bringing these two educational universes closer together. With this purpose, this present work presents an experience report based on the project “Winter School: building geographical knowledge to sow the future”, which took place in 2024 at the faculty of science and technology of the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (FCT/UNESP). First of all, we emphasize the importance of the financial support provided by FCT/UNESP, through the partnership between the Pro-Rectory of Graduate Studies (PROPG) and the Pro-Rectory of University Extension and Culture (PROEC). Given the experiences obtained, it was appropriate to provide elementary school students with a visit to university laboratories and museums, as well as to develop practical activities in these spaces. In general, this extension project fulfilled its purpose of bringing together FCT/UNESP and the elementary schools involved in the activities.
