    Since at least the 19th century, a strand of comparatism developed which declared itself inter-nationalist but was in fact colonialist or neocolonialist. Its procedure began with the very selection of works and authors considered comparable: not only were they European, but they also predominantly represented only a small number of European nation-states (France, Britain, and Germany, and to a limited extent Spain and Italy). The discipline’s expansion since the 1980s to include literatures from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and South and East Asia, not to mention previously marginalized European and North American traditions, has rarely challenged the centrality of Europe. In this respect, postcolonial studies is exemplary for consolidating literary and critical practices of valorization/devaluation, inclusion/exclusion, that preserved Europe as the reference point and chief interlocutor for literatures of what used to be known as the Third World, and nowadays as the Global South.

    This special issue of Gragoatá focuses on the newly emergent paradigm of South-South comparison. We invite submissions that address the following questions: What conceptions of comparison can be elaborated if we connect literatures from the Global South? How can South-South comparison contribute to rethinking the scope and limits of postcoloniality? What type(s) of commonality or interconnectedness can be construed as grounds for comparison among Global South literatures? What types of hegemony and resistance become visible when considering the Global South as a category of comparative literature? What is the role of diaspora and minorities in constituting or challenging conceptions of nations and nationality in the Global South? How are these diasporas erased and/or remembered to define what constitutes national identities? What is at stake in interpreting different literary and cultural traditions within the broad frame of reference of the Global South?

    Submissions can be in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish.

    The deadline is February 20, 2025.

    This issue of Revista Gragoatá has a different format than usual, as instead of a specific theme or area of study, it aims to provoke dialogues and debates based on the critical and essayistic work of Chilean professor and writer Ana Pizarro. Author of essays on literature and culture, Ana Pizarro's initial work developed towards the construction of an epistemological apparatus capable of generating innovative constructions in the way of thinking and translating Latin America. Starting from the trilogy “Latin America, word, literature and culture”, published in the 1990s, the collective work, which originally intended to be an “other” history of Latin American literature, became a significant spsce for discussion of themes and reflections on literature and culture produced on the continent, from a comparative perspective. In this work, Latin America is seen in its different latitudes: geopolitical, linguistic, ethnic and gender. In subsequent works, the emphasis, without abandoning the idea of cultural areas, will turn its focus to some of these specific areas and deepen the reflection on the Caribbean and, above all, on Amazonia, an area to which the essayist dedicated her most recent works.

    The world has always been - and still is - characterised by great linguistic diversity. One consequence of this diversity is the presence and use of more than one language in most societies and countries of the world. Some of these multilingual contexts have existed for a long time, others are due to more recent migration phenomena that are increasing in many regions of the world. In addition to this contact between languages, largely motivated by globalisation and leading to new multilingual contexts, another challenge arises: the teaching and learning of foreign languages in a world where distances are becoming shorter, leading to greater interaction between people and consequently between languages.

    This issue of the journal Gragoatá aims to bring together contributions that address these recent developments and discuss the intersection between language policy and language teaching in a broad framework, because "(...) teaching languages is both a choice and a political act" (Day, 2016, p. 5).

    With this call, we invite all interested parties to submit contributions around language teaching issues that address the relationship and meaning of language policy, especially in a glottopolitical approach (cf. Guespin & Marcellesi 1986; Lagares 2018), both in terms of foreign language teaching and in the context of minority or heritage languages. In this context, contributions dealing with questions of language choice, power and prestige, promotion and use of languages as well as language use in the school context are also decidedly welcome (cf. Krumm 2021).

    Papers may be written in English, French, German, Portuguese or Spanish and must be submitted between 02 April 2024 and 31 August 2024 (deadline for receipt). They will be subject to a double-blind review process. The journal issue is scheduled for publication in January 2025.


    Sprachenpolitik und Sprachunterricht

    Die Welt war schon immer – und ist nach wie vor – von einer großen sprachlichen Vielfalt geprägt. Eine Folge dieser Vielfalt ist das Vorhandensein und der Gebrauch von mehr als einer Sprache in den meisten Gesellschaften und Ländern der Welt. Einige dieser mehrsprachigen Kontexte bestehen seit langer Zeit, andere sind auf neuere Migrationsphänomene zurückzuführen, die in vielen Regionen der Welt zunehmen. Neben diesem maßgeblich durch die Globalisierung motivierten Kontakt zwischen den Sprachen, der zu neuen mehrsprachigen Kontexten führt, stellt sich eine weitere Herausforderung: das Lehren und Lernen von Fremdsprachen in einer Welt, in der die Entfernungen immer kürzer werden, was zu einer größeren Interaktion zwischen den Menschen und folglich auch zwischen den Sprachen führt.

    Diese Ausgabe der Fachzeitschrift Gragoatá möchte Beiträge zusammenbringen, die sich mit diesen jüngsten Entwicklungen befassen und die Schnittstelle zwischen Sprachenpolitik und Sprachunterricht in einem breiten Rahmen diskutieren, denn “(...) das Unterrichten von Sprachen ist sowohl eine Entscheidung als auch ein politischer Akt" (Day 2016: 85).

    Mit diesem Call laden wir alle Interessierten dazu ein, Beiträge rund um Themen des Sprachunterrichts einzureichen, die das Verhältnis und die Bedeutung der Sprachenpolitik, gerade auch in einem glottopolitischen Ansatz, thematisieren (vgl. Guespin & Marcellesi 1986; Lagares 2018), sowohl im Hinblick auf den Fremdsprachenunterricht als auch im Kontext von Minderheiten- oder Herkunftssprachen. In diesem Zusammenhang sind dezidiert auch Beiträge willkommen, die sich mit Fragen der Sprachwahl, der Macht und des Prestiges, der Förderung und des Gebrauchs von Sprachen sowie des Sprachgebrauchs im schulischen Kontext befassen (vgl. Krumm 2021).

    Die Beiträge können auf Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch, Portugiesisch oder Spanisch verfasst werden und sind zwischen 02. April 2024 und dem 31. August 2024 (Eingangsfrist) einzureichen. Sie werden einem Double-Blind-Begutachtungsverfahren unterzogen. Die Ausgabe der Zeitschrift soll im Januar 2025 veröffentlicht werden.
