Abstract

The "Arabian Nights" or "The Thousand and One Nights" Antoine Galland's version, achieved an enormous public success and influenced both the Western literature and the imaginary, since its publication at the beginning of the XVIIIth century. The French Arabist, author of the first translation of this narrative derived from oral sources is also the author of a rewritten version, adapted to classical standards and in perfect accordance with both literary works and knowledge of his time. This paper intends to show that Galland's version pertains to the Western literature, thanks to the translation trend of that era known as "belles infidèles".
