Abstract

An analysis is proposed of how the electoral context of the 2018 presidential elections in Brazil, characterized by an intense political and ideological polarization, conditioned the electoral behavior of university students. As an empirical reference, we consider the results of a survey that investigated the political culture of undergraduate students at UNISC (University of Santa Cruz do Sul), located in Rio Grande do Sul, carried out between the first and second round of the selections of 2018. As a theoretical reference, the Primary Model of Voter Behavior is considered, proposed by the North American theorists of political marketing, Bruce Newman and Jagdish Sheth, which considers seven domains of voter behavior: political questions, social imaginary, emotional dimension, image of the candidate, actuality, personal facts and epistemological questions. In the end, it is argued that the values that guided the electoral behavior of the students showed differences between the voters of Jair Bolsonaro and Fernando Haddad: while Bolsonaro voters valued more the “emotional feelings” and the “current events”, the voters of Haddad valued more the “social imaginary” and the “political themes”.
