Abstract

The research was carried out based on an evaluation of political regimes according to the classification of the Democracy Index (2022). The methodology consisted of a comparative investigation between Latin American countries in the years 2017 to 2021. According to the procedurally based Contemporary Democratic Theory, a democratic regime needs to fulfill some minimum conditions for the success of the democratic method. Most of these countries met the electoral requirements of democracy. But Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela were not classified as democracies. The results of the investigation confirmed a process of deterioration in most Latin American political regimes, with the exception of Uruguay, Costa Rica, Chile and Brazil. The latter was the only country not to show variation in its numbers.
