Abstract

The following article analyzes the implications and projections of the Chinese-Russian alliance in Asia and beyond. After a brief period in which the power exerted by the United States seemed incontestable, the international sphere is currently showing signs of a shift in hegemony toward the East, with China and Russia emerging as the main players. After mitigating areas of contention hindering an alliance, in recent years these two Asian giants have built a partnership – mainly on economic bases, but also with a profound geopolitical significance – to have been increasingly consolidated since 2013, with the swearing-in of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Professora Adjunta e Chefe do Depto. de Ciência Política do IFCS/UFRJ. Doutora em História (Universidade Federal Fluminense, UFF, Brasil.) Título da pesquisa: Percepções do espaço no Medievo Islâmico. O exemplo de Ibn Khaldun e Ibn Battuta. (Indicada para o Prêmio ANPUH 2010 pelo PPGH/UFF e publicada pela Editora Civilização Brasileira com o nome "O mundo falava árabe".) Graduada em Ciências Sociais pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) do Rio de Janeiro. Teve longa atuação como jornalista, no terreno internacional. Como correspondente de vários meios de comunicação latino-americanos e como fundadora, diretora e editora das revistas Cadernos do Terceiro Mundo (1974-2006), Ecologia e Desenvolvimento (1991-2006) e Revista do Mercosul (1992-2006) percorreu, ao longo de três décadas, a América Latina, África e Ásia (em particular o Oriente Médio), e fez a cobertura de momentos marcantes da história contemporânea como a guerra de libertação e a independência de Angola e Moçambique, a luta contra o apartheid na África do Sul, o conflito árabe-israelense, a guerra no Líbano, a questão do Iraque, as Conferências do Movimento Não Alinhado e da ONU (Beijing sobre a Mulher, etc). Uruguaia, naturalizada brasileira, morou na Argentina, Peru, México e Portugal. Consultora em Relações Internacionais (foi a Coordenadora do Comitê de Relações Internacionais do Governo do Maranhão, na gestão do Dr. Jackson Lago 2007-2009) e responsável das articulações dos projetos de cooperação junto ao Itamaraty. Preside o Espaço Cultural "Diálogos do Sul". Prêmio Vladimir Herzog e Golfinho de Ouro 2000 de Jornalismo.
