Abstract

This article aims to present a possible interpretation of a known work, but little worked on in a systematic way by Brazilian historiography. It is the text of the ombudsman from Vila Rica, Tomás Antônio Gonzaga, dedicated as a thesis for a chair of Natural Law at the University of Coimbra, when he was a recent graduate in Law. Through a comparative analysis of his discussion on the formation of civil society, good government and its purpose with some Pombaline texts and the neo-scholastic tradition, we seek to understand how a young jurist was formed in the 1760s - situated between the "political earthquake" and Coimbra's university reform - it behaved intellectually to investigate, initially in Gonzaga, the existence or not of an alternative political language to that formulated by the jurists allied to the Marquês de Pombal and made official during his ministry.
