BLACK INSURGENCES AND INSUBORDINATIONS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

RACIAL QUOTAS AND CURRICULUM TENSIONING AT UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

This text demonstrates that affirmative actions, such as racial quotas, not only constitute a fundamental instrument for the democratization of access to higher education, but also enable black bodies to challenge the production of university knowledge. For this, we divided the text into two parts: The first contextualizes the anti-racist struggle in Brazil, indicating that racial quotas only materialized from the struggle and mobilization of black movements throughout history; in the second, we discuss how racial quotas have allowed insubordinations and insurgencies to the white epistemic power perpetrated in the academic curriculum and research of undergraduate and graduate courses in Brazil. We conclude by pointing out the need for renewal and expansion of Law No. 12,711/2012, known as the quota law, so that black bodies can take possession of the university space and feel belonging, emerging as questioners of the logics of whiteness and becoming thinker, creator, theorist and communicator of non-Eurocentered epistemologies.
