LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES AND CHALLENGES IN TRANSLATION
Editors:

This dossier “Latin American perspectives and challenges in translation”, tries to contribute to a discussion in progress about translation in Latin America and Latin America in translation. In 2018, the Mexican publisher Bonilla Artigas published important volumes for the field: “Latinoamérica traducida: aproximaciones recientes desde un campo en construcción”, “Los Estudios de Traducción en América Latina: una mirada a la región” and “Traducción, identidad y nacionalismo en Latinoamérica”, organized by Nayelli Castro Ramírez, Anna Maria D’amore and Paula Andrea Montoya. This collection, in a way, celebrates a decade of the Colombian magazine “Mutatis Mutandis: Revista Latinoamericana de Traducción”, created at the Universidad de Antioquia, in 2008, which has encouraged the circulation of texts that help to problematize and qualify discussions on translation in Latin America.
Following this line, this issue of the Brazilian magazine “Gragoatá” seeks to bring together works that propose critical reflections on perspectives and challenges of translation and interpretation in the context of Latin America. We encourage authors to translate or discuss translations around thematic axes such as decolonialism, Amerindian perspectivism, post-classicism, feminisms, intersectionality, but not only: we expect articles that present investigations into translation issues in the most varied interfaces (such as with Language Studies, Literature, Performing and Visual Arts, Media Studies, History, Philosophy etc.) and that highlight some current panorama of translation practices and theories used in Brazil and Latin America. We seek to bring together a compilation of works that, put together, as if in a mosaic, help to create a portrait not only of what is being translated in Latin America, but also of what translators and researchers produce from Latin America or for Latin America. We understand that discussing “[...] [t]ranslation in Latin America is once again rethinking what Latin American identities are and what cultures are named under the adjective Latin American”, as Silva-Reis & Silva have said in “Horizontes da tradução na América Latina” (Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada, 57(1), 3-20, Jan./April, 2018).
Submissions – which will be subject to a double-blind review process – can be written in Portuguese, Spanish, English or French and must be sent between April 3rd and June 15th, 2025. The issue must be published in September 2025.
