Abstract

In this paper, we first present a summary of the extension course “Rhetoric, Discourse and Truth: its implications for teacher training” (2019), which was organized by the Study and Research Group on Philosophy and Education (DEVIR) of the Institute of Education of the Fluminense Federal University of Rio de Janeiro at the city of Angra dos Reis, Brazil. Among the thematic contents studied in the course, we chose to highlight in this discipline the political and historical importance of sophists in democracy and for the studies of Rhetoric, some relations between sophistry and truth in Platonic philosophy, crossing the contributions of Aristotelian rhetoric and Cicero's oratory, having as the main reference studies of Marilena Chauí. Finally, in the third part of the article, we present some of the developments of these contributions on ancient rhetoric to think about some meanings of the teacher's profession in the classroom today.
