Abstract

The article investigates paid domestic work (PDW) and its sociopolitical implications in Brazil. This bibliographic research aims to analyze three central dimensions of this occupation: the intersectionality of gender, race, and class; the structural inequality that characterizes this activity; and the construction of subjectivities related to PDW. In addition to economic and legal aspects, the article explores the role of affectivity in labor relations, highlighting how emotional closeness between employers and domestic workers can be used to justify exploitative practices. Despite legal innovations such as Constitutional Amendment No. 73 of 2013 and Complementary Law No. 150 of 2015, challenges persist in ensuring rights for this category. Data from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) indicate that the sector is predominantly composed of Black women, marked by low wages and high informality. In this context, inequality persists not only in material conditions but also in how affective relationships are manipulated to sustain power hierarchies. The normalization of subordination through affective discourses contributes to the perpetuation of gender, race, and class inequalities. The findings point to the continued existence of labor shaped by multiple social markers.
