Abstract
Coordinated by Reinaldo Cardenuto (UFF), Patrícia Machado (PUC-RJ) and Cintya Ferreira (UFF), the Cinemas em confronto project was born with the aim of creating an encyclopedia of short and medium-length films that took a stand against the Brazilian military dictatorship. Through a collaborative network of researchers from all over the country, the project seeks to bring together a significant number of entries on films that, between the 1960s and 1980s, criticized the authoritarianism in power. Seeking to fill gaps in Brazilian cinema studies, the aim is to create an encyclopedia that moves the non-canonical to the center of debate, highlighting the political and aesthetic strength of short and medium-length films that responded more assertively to the repressive regime’s excesses. An unprecedented cartography, with a panoramic perspective, capable of presenting the insubmission of a film format that has been marginalized from historical knowledge until now. Beginning the publication of its results, the project Cinemas em confronto offers the reader the first part of its encyclopedia, dedicated to films made between 1964 and 1968.
